How Does Carbon-Carbon Cover Plate Design Improve Thermal Management in Multi-Crystalline Furnaces?

Nov 06, 2026

If you operate or design multi-crystalline (mc-Si) ingot furnaces, you already know that small temperature differences inside the hot zone can decide whether a casting run gives a uniform ingot or a costly reject. A Carbon-Carbon Cover Plate is one of the quiet components that shapes that outcome. This article explains how cover plate design, material properties and heat distribution connect, and what to check when you specify one.

1. The Importance of Thermal Management in Multi-Crystalline Furnaces

In multi-crystalline silicon casting, silicon feedstock is melted in a crucible and then solidified from bottom to top. Both steps depend on a stable, predictable thermal field. If one corner of the hot zone runs hotter than another, melting becomes uneven, the solid-liquid interface tilts, and grains grow in unwanted directions.

Temperature differences between the top, sides and bottom of the furnace directly affect crystal quality. Typical consequences include higher dislocation density, uneven grain size, internal stress and cracking risk during cooling. Thermal field parts therefore have three jobs: control thermal radiation, reduce heat loss, and hold the temperature gradient where the process needs it.

The cover plate sits above the crucible and acts as a radiation shield and top boundary of the hot zone. This is why photovoltaic-field carbon-carbon components are treated as process-critical parts rather than simple consumables.

2. How Does Carbon-Carbon Cover Plate Design Influence Heat Distribution?

Cover Plate Geometry

Outline, diameter and mounting position decide how radiation is reflected and absorbed above the crucible. A plate that is too small leaves gaps where heat escapes. A plate that is mispositioned can create a hot spot above one side of the charge. Geometry must follow the specific furnace model, which is why custom drawings are common.

Thickness Selection

Thicker plates store more heat and respond more slowly to power changes, which smooths short temperature swings. Thinner plates heat up faster and reduce load on supports, but they may be less stable. The right value balances thermal inertia, stiffness and weight for your recipe.

Surface Configuration

Surface roughness, density and coating change emissivity, which controls how much heat is radiated back into the chamber. A consistent, well-machined surface keeps radiation behavior repeatable from one run to the next.

Thermal Field Coordination

The cover plate never works alone. It works with the heater, insulation, guard plates and crucible supports. A good design treats them as one system, so the plate supports uniform temperature across the charge instead of fixing one zone at the expense of another.

3. Why Are Carbon-Carbon Composite Materials Suitable for High-Temperature Thermal Management?

Carbon-carbon (C/C) composites combine carbon fibers with a carbon matrix. For furnace use, five properties matter most:

  • High-temperature resistance: carbon keeps its strength in inert or vacuum atmospheres at temperatures where many metals soften.
  • Low thermal expansion: small dimensional change during heating and cooling helps the plate keep its fit and flatness.
  • Thermal shock resistance: the fiber network spreads stress and helps limit crack growth during fast ramps.
  • Mechanical strength: the plate keeps its structure through repeated high-temperature cycles, unlike brittle monolithic graphite that can chip or fracture.
  • Lightweight structure: lower density than many alternatives makes handling, loading and support design easier.

Representative values for the Dehong plate, from the product page, are shown below.

Property Typical value
Density 1.5 g/cm³
Bending strength 160 MPa
Tensile strength 185 MPa
Compressive strength 140 MPa
Interlayer shear strength 25 MPa
Thermal conductivity (vertical) 8 W/m·K
Ash content ≤200 ppm
Graphitization temperature ≥2000 ℃
Size d ≤ 2000 mm

Representative values only, not guaranteed values.

The moderate vertical thermal conductivity is useful: the plate slows heat loss through the top without acting as a perfect insulator. The low ash content also matters, because impurities in a hot zone can become contamination risks for silicon.

4. How Does Thermal Stability Support Directional Solidification?

Directional solidification needs a controlled temperature gradient: the bottom must cool first while the upper melt stays hot, so the interface moves upward at a steady pace. The cover plate supports this in three ways.

  • It reduces upward heat loss, so the top of the melt does not cool too early.
  • It keeps radiation uniform across the surface, which helps keep the interface flat.
  • It stays dimensionally stable, so the thermal field at run 200 looks like the thermal field at run 1.

When the field fluctuates, the solidification rate changes, grains become uneven, impurities may segregate unpredictably, and stress can build up in the ingot. A stable C/C cover plate will not replace good process control, but it removes one source of drift. It also fits with other carbon parts in the same furnace, such as those listed in the product center.

5. Key Design Factors for Optimizing Carbon-Carbon Cover Plates

Fiber Architecture

2D laminates give good in-plane strength. 2.5D structures add some through-thickness reinforcement. 3D structures improve interlayer performance and dimensional stability but cost more. Dehong's plates are built from laminated non-woven and woven fabrics with fiber mats and needle-punching, then densified. Related structures are available in the preform field.

Material Density

Higher density generally raises strength and thermal conductivity, while lower density reduces weight and heat transfer. Choose the value that fits your load and heat-retention target, not simply the highest number.

Machining Accuracy

Tolerances, flatness and fit to the furnace support all affect both safety and radiation behavior. The process route is blank, compression molding, densification (gas-phase infiltration combined with liquid-phase impregnation), high-temperature treatment, machining and finished product. Inspection records are described on our quality inspection page.

Surface Coating

A SiC coating can improve surface stability, reduce dust shedding and lower contamination risk. Whether coating is needed depends on your atmosphere, cycle count and purity requirements.

Customized Dimensions

Multi-crystalline furnaces differ in chamber size and thermal field layout. Providing your drawing, operating temperature and cycle time lets the manufacturer match size, thickness and structure to the furnace. Similar carbon-carbon parts are also used in the vacuum furnace field.

6. Conclusion: Improving Furnace Performance Through Optimized Cover Plate Design

A Carbon-Carbon Cover Plate helps a multi-crystalline furnace by limiting heat loss, evening out radiation and holding its shape cycle after cycle. Its value comes from two things working together: the material (high strength, low expansion, thermal shock resistance, light weight) and the structure (geometry, thickness, fiber architecture and surface treatment). Matching these to your process supports a stable thermal field and more consistent directional solidification.
