The Role of Carbon Carbon Furnace Base Trays in Single-Crystal Growth

Oct 16, 2026

A carbon carbon furnace base tray is a small part of a single-crystal furnace, yet it affects how stable the whole hot zone is. This article explains what a C/C base tray does, why the material suits the job, and how to specify one, using the representative data Dehong Carbon publishes for its furnace base.

1Why Furnace Base Trays Matter in Single-Crystal Growth

Single-crystal growth, such as Czochralski silicon pulling, runs for many hours at very high temperature. The process needs a stable temperature field, a rigid mechanical structure, and a low-contamination environment. If a component under the hot zone shifts, warps, or sheds particles, the effects can reach the melt, the crystal and the yield.

The furnace base tray sits at the bottom of the hot-zone assembly. It works together with support rings, support rods, crucible holders and insulation to hold each component at its design position. Dehong describes its furnace base as an inner support ring and chassis protection component. Small changes in tray flatness or fit can change the geometry of the thermal field, and with it the temperature gradient the crystal sees.

2Key Functions of Carbon Carbon Furnace Base Trays

Reliable structural support. The tray carries the weight of the components stacked above it, so its job is to stay rigid at temperature. Bending, compressive and interlaminar shear strength all matter, because a laminated C/C plate is loaded across its thickness as well as in its plane. Diameter and thickness should be chosen together with how the load is distributed. A thin plate under a concentrated load can deflect, while a thicker plate spreads the load over more of the structure. Vibration, loading and unloading, and repeated heating and cooling add dynamic stress, so a tray should be assessed for peak load and for behavior over many cycles.

Thermal field stability. Heat travels through the tray as well as around it, so its thermal conductivity affects local heat flow at the bottom of the hot zone. Dehong lists a vertical thermal conductivity of 8.5 W/m·K, consistent with the "slow thermal conductivity" advantage the company highlights. A low through-thickness conductivity helps limit heat loss toward the cooler structure below. Tray shape and position also influence the temperature gradient. The tray is still only one element of the system: heater design, insulation structure and process parameters shape the final temperature distribution, and a base tray cannot correct problems that originate elsewhere.

Protecting the furnace structure. Lower hot-zone parts shield the chassis and internal supports from radiant heat and from contact with hot components. A tray that fits its seat accurately avoids point contact, rocking and forced assembly, all of which create stress that later shows up as cracks or chipped edges. Matching tolerances at the mounting interfaces is as important as the material itself.

3Why Carbon Carbon Composites Suit Furnace Base Trays

High-temperature mechanical performance. Carbon-based materials can keep their strength in vacuum or inert atmospheres, where many other materials soften. Dehong's product page lists a representative density of 1.5 g/cm³, bending strength of 180 MPa, tensile strength of 165 MPa, compressive strength of 140 MPa and interlayer shear strength of 20 MPa. These are manufacturer-published representative values, not guaranteed values, so confirm them against the specific grade and drawing.

Low density. At about 1.5 g/cm³, a C/C tray is lighter than a metal part of similar size, so a large-diameter tray is easier and safer to handle during hot-zone rebuilds.

Thermal stability. C/C composites generally show low thermal expansion, so a tray should hold its shape through repeated heating and cooling. This also helps with thermal shock, which matters because furnaces are cycled many times over a part's life.

Corrosion and ablation resistance. Dehong lists strong ablation and corrosion resistance among the advantages of its furnace base. Real performance depends on atmosphere, temperature and exposure time. Carbon materials suit vacuum and inert gas but are vulnerable to oxidation if oxygen is present at high temperature.

4How Manufacturing Affects Tray Performance

Dehong describes a process that starts with laminated non-woven fabric, woven fabric and carbon fiber felt. The layered structure sets the strength balance between in-plane and through-thickness directions. Needle-punching then links the layers with fibers running across the thickness, which improves interlayer bonding and helps resist delamination. This matters because interlayer shear is often the weak point of a laminate. The preform is then densified by a process that integrates chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) and liquid impregnation, which fills pores with carbon matrix and raises density and strength. Precision machining sets final diameter, thickness, flatness and mounting features, and surface quality affects how well the tray seats against neighboring parts.

5How to Select a Carbon Carbon Furnace Base Tray

Equipment makers and purchasing teams can narrow the choice with five questions.

1. Temperature and atmosphere?Vacuum and inert gas favor carbon materials. Any oxygen exposure changes the risk.
2. Static and dynamic loads?Include full stack weight plus loads from motion and handling.
3. Diameter, thickness, interfaces?Provide a drawing or the existing part number.
4. Purity and accuracy?Dehong lists ash ≤200 ppm and graphitization ≥2000°C. Check these against your process and ask for inspection data.
5. Custom for your furnace?Retrofits often need specific bolt patterns, steps or cutouts. Share the furnace model early.

6Maintenance for Longer Service Life

Service life depends on operating conditions, design and maintenance, so no fixed lifespan should be assumed. Inspect the tray regularly for cracks, surface damage and unusual deformation. Check that the seat, support points and load distribution are still correct after each rebuild. Evaluate oxidation risk against the real furnace atmosphere, including leaks and process gases. Keep a record of thermal cycle counts, abnormal runs and replacements, so replacement decisions rest on data rather than guesswork.
